How to Make Your New House Feel Like Home

28/09/2022

If you’ve just moved house, sometimes it can take a little while for the new house to truly feel like it’s yours. There are some simple things you can do once you’ve unpacked the kettle to help make your new house feel more like home and less like a room full of boxes.

Splash on the Paint

One of the first things to do once you’re in your new home, is get some fresh paint on the walls. Even if you are not sure on your colour scheme yet, get some plain white paint and give the walls a refresh. This will cover up any decorating faux pas from the previous owners, give you a blank canvas and help make it feel like your own. If you already know what colours you want to paint the walls, then that’s a bonus and you can dive right in.

Put Up New Curtains

If you’ve just moved, then it’s possible that you left your curtains in your old house. It may be the case that you now need some new curtains, and if your windows are a different size then they may need to be curtains that are made to measure. Made to measure curtains are great if you have an awkward sized window and can’t get curtains ‘off the shelf’. Adding made to measure curtains will enable you to add some of your own styling to the house and will help it feel more like a cosy home.

Add Pictures and Photos

Putting up any art and prints you had in your previous home will instantly make it feel like your home, even if it is just leaning them against walls or on mantle pieces for now until you find their final homes on the walls. Having family photos out will also make you feel more at home. Perhaps you can create a gallery wall of your art and photos. It could be a different layout to what you had previously but using some of the same art prints will make it feel familiar and homely.

Add House Plants

Unpack any house plants you have brought with you, and maybe even add some more. They will instantly add some colour to your home, and they can literally breathe new life into your new home. Large house plants may update any blank corners you may have and again will make your new home feel more familiar.

Make It Cosy

To truly make your home feel like an oasis, unpack all your favourite things first. Get your cosy cushions and blanket throws on the sofa and get out your favourite candles. It is true that certain scents can trigger certain memories, so light your favourite candles and let the familiar scent fill your new house and help make it feel more like home. The same can be said for music. Play your favourite playlist whilst unpacking and let the music make you feel at home.

If you follow some of these tips, you will be unpacked and feeling settled in your new home in no time. It won’t be long before you’re no longer calling it your new home, but just calling it ‘home’.
