With so much to see and do, it can be challenging to plan the perfect trip. That’s where Mondomulia comes in! I have curated the ultimate guide to Amsterdam, featuring insider tips and must-see attractions to ensure that your visit to this incredible city is truly unforgettable. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore all that Amsterdam has to offer – start planning your dream trip today!

1. Research the City

Before you start planning your trip, make sure to do some research on Amsterdam. Knowing what’s available in terms of attractions and activities will help you decide which ones to prioritise. In addition, the internet is an excellent resource for learning more about the city, so take some time to read up on Amsterdam before booking anything.

But, overall, Amsterdam is a fairly compact city, and getting around is quite easy. With this in mind, it’s best to have an idea of what you want to do before booking anything so that you can plan your itinerary accordingly.

2. Book Your Accommodation

Choosing where to stay in Amsterdam is one of the most important decisions when planning a trip. The city has plenty of accommodation options, ranging from luxurious five-star hotels to budget-friendly hostels.

Decide on your budget and research different options before making a decision. It’s also worth noting that many hotels are located near the main attractions, so if convenience is important to you, then choosing one of these might be the way to go.

For example, if you want to explore the city’s iconic canals, then consider staying in a hotel near one of Amsterdam’s many canal boat tours. This way, you won’t have to worry about finding your way around and can enjoy an uninterrupted sightseeing experience.

3. Learn Some of the Local Language

If you want to make your experience in Amsterdam even more memorable, try learning a few words of Dutch. Although English is widely spoken in the city, being able to communicate with locals and understand some of the historical landmarks will be much easier if you know a little Dutch.

Take some time before your trip to learn some key phrases, and don’t forget to practice them when you arrive. The locals will appreciate it, and you’ll have an even better experience because of it.

Good morning, for example, is Goede morgen in Dutch, and it’s sure to make a lasting impression.

4. Check Out the City’s Events Calendar

Amsterdam is known for its vibrant culture and exciting events calendar. From music festivals to art exhibitions, there’s always something going on in the Dutch capital. So before making any travel plans, take a look at the city’s events calendar and decide which ones you want to attend.

This is also a great way to discover some of Amsterdam’s hidden gems. For example, checking out an innovative art exhibition in one of the city’s many galleries or attending a local music festival can make your experience even more memorable.

5. Plan your Itinerary

Now that you’ve done some research, booked your accommodation and decided which events you want to attend, it’s time to start planning an itinerary.

For daytime activities, I would suggest spending some time exploring the city’s iconic canals, as well as visiting its many museums and galleries. The Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank’s Home is one of Amsterdam’s must-see attractions, and it’s well worth a visit. For my flower lovers, you can’t miss Amsterdam’s famous flower market on the Singel Canal. It’s a great place to pick up some souvenirs and admire some of the city’s most beautiful blooms.

When night falls, you’ll find plenty of places to dine and drink in Amsterdam. From traditional Dutch pubs to award-winning restaurants, there are plenty of options for all tastes and budgets. De Wallen in Amsterdam is perhaps the most well-known nightlife spot in the city, so make sure to check it out.

Don’t forget to leave time for yourself – from relaxing in one of Amsterdam’s many parks to simply watching the world go by from a cafe terrace; take some time for yourself and enjoy the atmosphere this incredible city has to offer.

6. Bring Clothing For All Weather

Amsterdam can be unpredictable when it comes to the weather. In the summer months, temperatures can reach soaring heights, and in winter, they can drop below zero. So make sure you pack clothes suitable for all seasons – pack a lightweight coat and scarf for colder days, and a sun hat and plenty of sunscreens if it becomes hot.

A nice pair of walking shoes would also be a great addition to your packing list. Amsterdam’s cobbled streets can be quite treacherous, and it’s always best to be prepared.

7. Know How to Ride a Bicycle

Amsterdam is known for its excellent public transport system, but the best way to get around is by bicycle. This is a city where cycling is a way of life, so if you want to make the most of your time here, it’s worth learning how to ride a bike.

Fortunately, renting a bike in Amsterdam is easy, and there are plenty of shops across the city offering reasonably priced rentals. Most will even provide you with helmets and locks for added security. Plus, it’s an enjoyable way to explore all that this beautiful city has to offer!

8. List Local Cuisines that You Want to Try

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without trying some of its delicious local cuisines. From traditional Dutch dishes like stamppot and bitterballen to international flavours such as Indonesian rijsttafel, there’s something for everyone. My favourite is stroopwafels – two thin waffles filled with sweet syrup and a great snack for when you’re on the go. Oliebollen, aka Dutch doughnuts, is also a must try especially for those of you with a sweet tooth! You can find more tips in my foodie guide of Amsterdam.
